Turmeric
Turmeric has a flavour which is at once earthy, spicy, sharp and bitter with a hint of ginger and a lingering depth. Despite it's depth and complexity, however, it is often included in recipes to add colour to food rather than flavour.
Turmeric is mostly associated with South Asian cuisine where it is almost ubiquitous in the many varieties of garam masala and in many curry dishes. It is an excellent amalgamating spice in blends where it can harmonise the conflicting notes of cardamom, cumin and fenugreek, for example.
Stored correctly in Kitchen Herbarry packaging turmeric will keep its quality of flavour for up to two years.
Fun Fact: Turmeric is approved for use as a food colour. Its European Food Safety Authority assigned code is E100.
